It is produced by digesting calcium oxide with water and further processing. This strongly alkaline substance gradually absorbs carbon dioxide in the air, becoming calcium carbonate. Soluble in acid and slightly in water, its aqueous solution is a colorless, odorless alkaline liquid with a pH of 12.4.
