Calcium oxide has important applications in the metallurgical industry
Calcium oxide is a commonly used slag making material in steel smelting. During the steelmaking process, the addition of calcium oxide can react chemically with impurities such as silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur in the molten iron, producing corresponding silicates, phosphates, and sulfides. These reaction products will form slag, floating on the surface of the molten steel, thereby achieving separation from the molten steel, removing impurities, and improving the quality of the steel.
By controlling the amount of calcium oxide added, the alkalinity of the slag can be adjusted to achieve the appropriate composition and performance. Appropriate slag alkalinity helps to improve the fluidity, stability, and reactivity of slag, promote various chemical reactions in the steelmaking process, such as dephosphorization and desulfurization reactions, and also protect the furnace lining, extending the service life of the steelmaking furnace.
During the steelmaking process, calcium oxide reacts with phosphorus and sulfur to produce stable compounds such as calcium phosphate and calcium sulfide, thereby achieving the goal of dephosphorization and desulfurization. The dephosphorization reaction generally needs to be carried out under high alkalinity and oxidizing conditions. Calcium oxide provides an alkaline environment, promoting the oxidation of phosphorus and the generation of calcium phosphate; The desulfurization reaction is achieved by reacting calcium oxide with sulfides to fix sulfur in the slag and reduce the sulfur content in the molten steel.
